Well I broke down and went to buy myself a new digital camera tonight. I settled on this baby: 
Now I have a slight problem. It works so well that I can't seem to take a picture under 1.3 Mb. Many are in the 2 Mb range. I can always send these pictures back to myself through Outlook and make them smaller, but having dial-up, that might take a while. What do you guys use to 'downsize' pictures? Is there any program I can download free off the net? Thanks in advance folks. |

Yes I'll link below to a microsoft program called resizer. After you install right click on the photo and in the menu box you'll see Resize Pictures. Just scroll to it and open and you'll have choice of enlarging or making smaller. Works great. I too have also just brokedown and finally got one to. have Fun with it. Microsoft Resizer |

Alain, that resizer by microsoft is great, you can do multiple pictures at once. Once you download the pics from the camera to the computer, there usually is an explorer box with the pictures all selected. Just right click and check out all your options. I use this thing everyday as I take lots of pictures for my job. The one I use most is found under the advanced tab, "resize the original pictures (don't make copies)". Now if you want to keep a large size image than of course don't check the box. There was a discussion just a week or two ago about the difference in image quality and this is what one of the guys said, [quote=James Orr]What the save for web does, and the others may do, is convert your image to 72 dpi. Nice! Your camera shoud have differnet quality settings. But if you're like the rest of us guys, you probably didn't read the manual and don't know how to do it!

Great camera, Alain, good choice!! I love Canon's cameras, video and still both. Their user interface design expertise makes their stuff easy to use, but their real talent seems to be in providing expert features without mucking up the simple part. This I think is where their stuff shines. Plus, they make great images too. |

Mike and Rod, thanks a lot for the help with the resizer. I managed to work it out with the program I have now. ACDSee? Or something to that effect.... Sergio, now that I have the techy part of it figured out, I'll be posting some pics soon. Very soon. 
Hesh, I was going to go for something a little cheaper and with less resolution, but you know me with my compulsivity and all that... I just couldn't resist the call... My flesh is weak! Actually, I'm quite surprised that I didn't walk away with a 8 MP Rebel... Might of been that price tag. 
Pat, I've only taken a few pics but I am very very pleased with the quality of those shots. I used to operate a Canon S1 IS at 5 Meg's, and that one took some really good pictures as well. I think this one is even better. |

Cool Alain. So on a slightly different but related note..... What are you all using for batteries? I use Maha PowerEx AA's. I have the 2500 series (2300mAh capacity) and the Maha 4 bank charger. There is a guy in Montreal that sells them (and some very good chef's knifes as well). His prices are very good Here's a link to the battery section of his site. These batteries just rock. I use my camera every day for work, I always use a flash (every single shot, time is of the essence for me and I don't like changing with every shot, so I just leave it on) and I get about 200 pictures at 1600x1200 setting. Now, I know that there will be someone here who will say that they can get 600 pictures from there batteries, but I will guess that there is no flash or very few flash pictures there. I don't know what I could get if I didn't use a flash (but I know what type of pictures I would get  so I flash away )
I spent about a week reading about battery life and camera's before I picked these batteries and I don't regret it one bit. That's my 2 bits, or AA

Thanks for the good tip Rod. I was contemplating getting some re-chargeables... I just bought some run of the mill duracell's... I'm not expecting much from them, though. In my previous S2 IS, store bought batteries weren't even powerful enough to fire up the camera! I'll be checking out that ling for sure! Thanks again... and would you know it, I'm also in the market for a set of good knifes too!!! Cheers! |
